AS A NEW PEDIATRICIAN

Children are the future generation for this nation. Child health problem is one of the main problems in the health sector which often happens in Indonesia. Actually, the degree of children health can reflect the degree of a nation's health. Progress and setbacks of a nation is determined by the life quality of the current generation, where, as mentioned before; children happen to be the next generation for this nation. Therefore, their health issue must be prioritized so as to produce a generation which has a top notch quality, as well as to produce a nation which is able to compete internationally. This goal can surely be achieved if the life quality of the people is improved (since childhood or even from the renowned golden period, which is the first 1000 days of life calculated from conception to the age of 2 years after birth). One way to solve the problems related to children health is to increase the insight and knowledge on what happens during childhood. Paediatricians tend to have in-depth knowledge of every aspect of children health.

Hearing the word “pediatrician”, brought up various questions and mixed feelings in my mind. “How do I become a good pediatrician? How does it feel to be a pediatrician? What preparations have to be made?” And there are many other questions that arise. I feel amazed, as well as curious about the struggle behind the process of becoming a pediatrician. Being a healthcare worker is something that many people desire. As a layman, the medical profession, especially a pediatrician, is a noble profession, and identical with wealthness, so it is not uncommon for many parents to dream that their child will become a doctor in the future. In fact, becoming a pediatrician is not easy and you have to go through many difficulties and a long process, filled with joy and tears. Starting from the college entrance exam to become an undergraduate student in the medical faculty to the entrance exam for the Medical Specialist Education Program (PPDS), there are many challenges and sacrifices to be done. After successfully getting an additional doctor's title in front of his name, as a new general practitioner, the next thing to do is to join the internship. After the internship was successfully passed, thoughts began to arise about where this step should be taken. Doing the firm determination and thorough preparation, several general practitioners chose the path to become pediatricians by participating in the Pediatric Residency.

As we know, pediatricians are doctors who are experts in dealing with children, where according to WHO criteria, the age of children is included in the age from the womb to 17 years old. In daily life, it is not easy to deal with children. Starting from his fussiness, curiosity behavior, and many other things. Moreover, not all children can cooperatively express their feeling. Of course, a pediatrician must be good at catching complaints that the child cannot convey. “Children are not the mini versions of adults”, pediatricians said. Being a pediatrician teaches us about the meaning of life. We can't choose to be born by whom and what condition we have, but we can try our best and pray to improve the situation. A few children are born unluckily. Some are born with defects, even an incurable diseases.

The children are the future of the universe. They are the hope of the nation; and obviously they are also the hope of their parents. When one becomes a new paediatrician, the happiest thing for her/him would be when s/he is seeing the smile on the patient's face (as well as the smiles of the patient's family members every time their child successfully went through a critical phase or have recovered). Amidst the busyness of pediatricians; those smiles could somehow serve as encouragements for them to finish yet another day at work. The first experience obtained after successfully handling a case will also be a satisfaction for a new paediatrician. Experience is obtained from handling various cases through problem case learning. All of our knowledge comes from experience. Many people can be successful because they have a lot of experience. Every experience in life is set to teach us something that we need in order for us to be able to move forward. Even up to this day when I have already achieved the title of "Sp.A"; the smile in a patient's face when s/he has recovered from her/his illness can still spark a light in the dark and tiring days at work. For me, a split second of smile from a healthy child equals to a crucial split second to save the future of this nation.
